1. Is the IB program stressful?

The IB DP is demanding because students complete six subjects, the Extended Essay, and CAS over two years. Strong time-management skills are important. At the same time, CAS encourages students to engage in sports, the arts, and community service, supporting a more balanced experience beyond academics.

2. Can students pursue the IB if they are not equally strong in every subject?

Yes. The DP allows students to build a subject combination around their strengths. Only three or four subjects are studied at Higher Level, while the others are taken at Standard Level. Students do not need to excel equally in every area, but they should have clear goals and strong independent learning habits.

3. How is the IB different from AP?

The IB offers a connected educational pathway from PYP through MYP to DP, with compulsory components such as the Extended Essay and CAS in the full Diploma. AP, by contrast, consists of individual advanced courses originating in the United States, offering greater flexibility for students who want to focus on selected academic subjects.

4. Where can students study the IB in Ho Chi Minh City?

The original article lists four authorized IB Continuum Schools in Ho Chi Minh City: SNA Saigon South, ISHCMC, EIS, and Renaissance Saigon. It also notes that BIS offers the DP; AIS combines the PYP, Cambridge IGCSE, and DP; and TAS offers the PYP and is seeking DP authorization.

5. Does the IB Diploma help students earn international scholarships?

Yes, it may strengthen an application, but scholarships are not automatic. Strong IB results can enhance an academic profile, while EE and CAS experiences provide material for essays and interviews. Awards ultimately depend on each university’s criteria and the applicant’s overall achievements.

6. What makes the IB program at SNA Saigon South distinctive?

SNA is identified in the original article as one of four IB Continuum Schools in Ho Chi Minh City, authorized to offer the PYP, MYP, and DP. The source also describes WASC and CIS accreditation. Students can begin in Grade 1 and continue through graduation at the same school. The article mentions up to 50% tuition support through the 2026–2027 SNA NextGen Scholarship.

7. What is a good IB score?

The global average for the May 2026 session was 30.88 out of 45. Against that benchmark, 35 points or above is generally considered a strong result, while scores of 40 or higher place students among approximately the top 5% of candidates, according to the figures cited in the original article. Actual entry requirements differ by university and program.

8. When should my child start studying the IB?

Starting earlier can make the transition smoother. Students who progress through the PYP or MYP become familiar with inquiry-based learning, independent research, and academic writing before entering the DP. The original article recommends beginning by Grade 10 where possible, allowing a year of preparation before the two-year DP.

9. Can students transfer from the Vietnamese national curriculum to the IB?

Yes. Two important areas of preparation are academic English—including reading comprehension and essay writing, not only conversational English—and independent study habits supported by critical thinking. Many IB schools offer language support for students moving between systems. Parents should ask about these services during admissions.

Also known as the International Tee-Ball Festival, the annual youth sports and cultural exchange event is hosted by the Korea T-ball Federation. This year’s tournament is expected to bring together around 40 teams from South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Mongolia, Vietnam and Indonesia.

The competition marks another milestone for SNA Saigon South’s T-ball program, which has grown from introducing students to a relatively unfamiliar sport into opportunities to compete internationally.

In 2025, the SNA T-ball team became the first Vietnamese school team to compete in the Asia Open International Teeball Tournament in Japan. Facing teams from countries and regions where the sport is more established, SNA students experienced a level of competition rarely available to young T-ball players in Vietnam.

For many students, it was their first experience of international competition. Beyond the results, the tournament challenged them to communicate across cultural and language barriers, adapt to unfamiliar surroundings and perform under pressure while representing Vietnam.

“Our entire SNA community is incredibly proud of our young Eagles as they prepare to represent the school and Vietnam in Korea. This opportunity reflects their commitment, teamwork and perseverance, as well as our belief that every student should be supported to discover their strengths and pursue excellence beyond the classroom. Go Eagles!” said Dr. Robert Mullins, Head of School.

Their upcoming competition in Korea builds on that experience and months of preparation, including regular training sessions and matches against local teams. Students have developed the technical skills, tactical understanding, and match experience needed to compete with confidence, alongside qualities that extend beyond the game, including discipline, perseverance, communication, and leadership.

As one of the first international schools in Ho Chi Minh City to offer T-ball, SNA Saigon South Campus has helped introduce students to a sport that remains relatively unfamiliar in Vietnam. Through opportunities to train, compete and connect with young athletes from across Asia, the school is contributing to the sport’s development while giving students a chance to represent their country.

The development of T-ball at SNA Saigon South Campus reflects the school’s wider Sport Excellence philosophy: every student should have the opportunity to discover a sport that matches their interests, strengths and ambitions. Alongside T-ball, students can choose from a wide range of sports, including football, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, pickleball, virtual golf, martial arts, dance, swimming, and badminton, all supported by high-quality coaching and meaningful opportunities to train, develop, and compete.

This range allows Sport Excellence to look different for every student. For some, it means the discipline of T-ball training and the challenge of international competition. For others, it takes place on a different court, in the pool or on another field. Across every sport, success at SNA Saigon South Campus is measured not only by trophies, but also by the confidence, resilience, tolerance and positive habits students develop along the way.

The SNA Saigon South community wishes the team every success as they prepare to represent the school in Korea. Go Eagles!

Insights from SNA’s Pathway to Grade 1 Program

Starting Grade 1 is one of the first major milestones in a child’s life. As they move from kindergarten into primary school, children step into a new daily rhythm with longer learning periods, new experiences, and new relationships waiting ahead.

For many parents, the real question isn’t how well their child can read or do maths, but whether they are ready for the transition to primary school.

At SNA Saigon South, an IB Continuum School offering a seamless International Baccalaureate (IB) education, we believe being ready for Grade 1 is about far more than academic skills. It’s about helping children feel confident, independent, and excited to begin this new chapter. Through our Pathway to Grade 1 Program, children gradually develop these qualities, making the transition into international primary school a positive and rewarding experience.

1. A strong learning foundation helps children embrace new knowledge with confidence

Before starting Grade 1, children do not need to know everything they will learn in the year ahead. What matters more is developing the confidence, curiosity, and learning habits that prepare them to embrace new ideas in the classroom. Becoming familiar with letters, numbers, and basic concepts is part of this preparation.

At SNA’s Pathway to Grade 1 Program, children are also encouraged to ask questions, share their thinking, and explore ideas in their own ways, taking their first steps towards the inquiry-based approach of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP). Through a supportive English-language international learning environment, children begin developing the confidence, communication skills, and curiosity that help them become future-ready learners.

This approach comes to life through age-appropriate interdisciplinary activities that connect learning across different subjects. In one lesson, for example, children counted and colored ducks before exploring where ducks live and how they behave. By bringing Mathematics and Science together in a playful, meaningful way, the activity encourages children to observe, make connections, and develop their curiosity about the world around them while supporting holistic child development and a lifelong love of learning.

2. Small classroom habits help children become more independent each day

As children enter Grade 1, they begin developing the everyday habits that help them become active members of the classroom community. They learn to listen to their teacher, prepare their learning materials, move between activities, and complete age-appropriate tasks with increasing independence.

At SNA’s Pathway to Grade 1 Program, children experience the rhythm of a real school day through simple, familiar routines. They learn where to put their backpacks, prepare for lessons, join their classmates for morning circle time, raise their hands to share ideas, and move confidently between individual and group activities. Even tidying up after a lesson becomes an opportunity to develop responsibility and care for their classroom.

As these routines become familiar, children gain a better understanding of the school day, what they can do independently, and when to ask for help. By the time they begin Grade 1, the classroom feels like a familiar place where they can learn with confidence.

3. Becoming familiar with school life builds confidence beyond the classroom

For a Grade 1 student, school life extends beyond the classroom. From the hallways and playground to lunchtime and specialist lessons, children encounter new routines, teachers, and friendships throughout the day.

Experiencing school life before the academic year begins gives children time to become familiar with their new environment. From finding their way to the classroom and taking part in daily routines to talking with teachers and asking for help, each experience builds their confidence, independence, and sense of belonging.

4. Feeling safe gives children the confidence to learn and grow

Beyond knowledge and skills, children also need time to adjust emotionally. A child may read confidently or be quick with numbers and still feel nervous about being away from their parents, meeting a new teacher, or walking into a classroom filled with unfamiliar faces.

As children settle in, make friends, and build trusting relationships with their teachers, they gradually develop a sense of belonging. In SNA’s classrooms, they are encouraged to express their needs with simple phrases such as, “I need help,” “Can I try?” and “I don’t understand.”

Over time, unfamiliar faces become familiar. Children know their teachers, recognize their classmates, and understand that there is always someone they can turn to for support. This sense of security gives them the confidence to ask questions, try new things, and see that making mistakes is a natural part of learning.

5. A strong beginning opens the door to a confident learning journey

Being ready for Grade 1 does not mean knowing everything from the very first day. It means having the foundation to embrace new learning, understand the rhythm of classroom life, connect confidently with the wider school community, and feel secure about the journey ahead.

For families looking for an international school in Ho Chi Minh City or an international school in District 7, SNA Saigon South offers a full IB education from the PYP to the MYP and DP in a supportive international learning environment. Admissions are now open. Contact our Admissions Team to learn more and discover why SNA is a trusted choice for families seeking an IB international school in Ho Chi Minh City.
